A wird is a special litany the shaykh gives the murid (student) to recite twice daily. When a murid recites the wird as instructed, the essence of the tariqah is transmitted into their heart. Through this wird, they are connecting to their shaykh, to all of the shuyukh in their lineage, and to the heart of our beloved Master Muhammad (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam). Allah has made our beloved Master Muhammad as a mercy for all the worlds, and that includes us in our sincere yearning to attain intimacy with Allah (subhanahu wa ta`ala). The wird is a must for all murids walking to to our Beloved Allah, Most High, in the Shadhiliyya Sufi way.
The `Awaliya wird was crafted by Sidi Ahmad bin Mustafa al-`Alawi (qaddasallahu sirrahu), the Renewer of the Shadhiliyya tariqah for the 20th century. He recommended we recite this wird twice a day every day, insha'allah. Our beloved guides Sidi Ahmad ar-Rifa`i and Sidi Abdul Karim al-Afghani (jazakallah khayrun) recite this wird twice a day, masha'allah. Sidi Muhammad Sa`id al-Jamal ar-Rifa`i ash-Shadhili (qaddasallahu sirrahu) recited this wird twice a day while he was in the dunya, and he gave a simplified version to his U.S. students.
The perfect times to recite the wird are immediately after praying Fajr prayer and immediately after praying Maghrib prayer, insha'allah. The downloads below include many details about the wird, and they answer many of the questions you may have. May your journey with the wird be life changing and bring you closer to your Beloved Allah. Amin.
